What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

The first therapy session is mostly a conversation. We talk about what brought you in and what you are hoping might be different, cover a little housekeeping, and start to get a feel for working together. You are not expected to hand over your hardest story on day one, and there is no script you can fail to follow.

What we talk about

Expect questions about what is going on now and what you would like to change. You lead. We might ask a bit about your history, how things have been affecting your daily life, and what support has or has not helped before. If there is something you are not ready to get into, you say so, and we move on. The first session is as much about you getting oriented as it is about us learning your story.

The housekeeping part

We will cover the practical things: how confidentiality works and its limits, scheduling, fees and insurance, and how we communicate between sessions. None of it is dramatic, and all of it is meant to make the space feel predictable and safe. You are welcome to ask us to slow down or explain anything that is unclear.

If your first session is by telehealth

Telehealth sessions work much the same way. You find a private spot where you will not be interrupted, we send you a secure link, and we talk. Many people find it easier to start from the comfort of home, especially on a nervous first day. You can always switch to in person later if you prefer.

You are allowed to interview us

Fit matters more than almost anything else in therapy. You can ask us questions, including the blunt ones, about how we work, our experience with what you are carrying, and what to expect over time. Feeling it out is encouraged, not awkward. A good first session leaves you with a sense of whether this is someone you could trust.

If it is not a match

Sometimes the fit is not right, and that is genuinely fine. If we are not the people for what you need, we will help you find someone who is. No hard feelings, ever. The point is that you get good support, not that you stay with us.

Common questions about a first session

How long is a first therapy session?

Usually about an hour. We will confirm the exact length when you schedule.

Will I have to talk about my childhood?

Only if and when it is useful to you. You decide what to bring in and when. Plenty of first sessions stay focused on what is happening right now.

What if I get emotional or do not know what to say?

Both are completely normal and completely welcome. You do not need the right words. Silence and tears are both allowed, and neither one is a problem to solve.

Do I need to prepare anything?

No preparation is required. If it helps, you can jot down what has been on your mind, but showing up is enough.

When you are ready
